Earning a Decolonial Living Abroad - Recording of Live Session

Leaving the US and creating new pathways for income that align with your values and support global mobility

Chris Musei-Sequeira, PMP and I had a great discussion about emigration, livelihoods, values alignment, psychological safety, and more.

Highlights:

  • Chris provided a bit of interesting history about Romania, he has moved with his wife, Maria, last year. Maria emigrated from Romania to the US in the early 2000s. Now, Chris is undergoing the immigrant experience with Maria in her homeland.

  • Chris and Maria left the US to pursue a more reasonable cost of living, increased safety, and closer connection to her family.

  • Chris told a poignant story about safety - rather, lack thereof - living in a NYC neighborhood targeted by US immigration authorities last year, revealing the experience of so many US citizens who, due to racism, are targeted by or at risk of being targeted by migration authorities.

  • We discussed the relevance and importance of psychological safety, and the ways in which living in the US damages our health and well-being through necessary hypervigilance.

  • We talked about the sense of moral injury that occurs when professionals (like both of us) take on mission-based employment roles, only to learn that our actual jobs supported the maintenance of inequitable and extractive systems.

  • Chris is one of a growing network of US diasporans seeking to build a more equitable, more sustainable, decolonial society; emigration is helping his family find the “spaciousness” to create something new and values-aligned.

Chris provides marketing services to people who are building the world beyond capitalism and colonialism. His clients include small business owners and freelancers in multiple industries and countries. They all share the same vision: a world that maximizes care rather than profit.

Chris is a trained aeronautical engineer and environmental policy analyst with 15 years of experience managing USA government and consulting projects, totaling over $30 million USD of contract expenditure. He launched his business CJSC, LLC after becoming disillusioned with the extractive and colonial aspects of the mainstream sustainability sector. Chris recently left the USA to settle with his wife in her home country of Romania.
