Wow. I have similar concerns about people who come to Portugal and then are upset (racist) that Black people are here. Portugal has a system whereby anyone from a Portuguese-speaking country can apply to be a citizen of Portugal. Portugal was a huge colonizer, and many colonized places were primarily-Black countries. This is easy to know by Googling(!) Portugal before immigrating! People need to learn the laws of where they are going, and be open to their new country's customs. Unfortunately, this racism is common among Americans and Northern Europeans

Thank you for sharing this! Yes, the Portuguese colonized African countries and enslaved and trafficked Black Africans to the Americas in stunning numbers. If anyone has the right to immigrate to Portugal it's those whose ancestors were exploited by them. I'm curious how you have learned that US and Northern European white immigrants to Portugal were upset about the presence of Black people? Did they tell you directly? To your point about Google, how ignorant does someone have to be to think Portugal would be all "white"? It's mind-blowing.

Yes, some people from Northern Europe and the US (MAGAts, naturally) were carrying on about the "Blacks" at a couple of expat events we were at. We no longer go.

It's outrageous. I can't help but think "who raised you???"

I’m ashamed to say that this kind of attitude and behaviour is also common among many Brits.

I believe that, especially given all of the reports out of Spain about horrible Brit behavior.

This is an amazing interpretation of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's comments on the illegal, obscenely colonialist practice of foreigners buying beachfront property and excluding the Mexican public from the beach. https://substack.com/@elizabethsillecklarueesq/note/c-133035086
